Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Group Leader

Des Moines, IA

GSI is seeking experienced candidates for a full-time Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Group Leader position in our Des Moines, Iowa office. The successful candidate will have excellent written and oral communication skills, strong technical and interpersonal skills, and financial and business management experience. Must be self-motivated, innovative, and able to work successfully with staff at all levels.

Responsibilities Include:

Management:

  • Provide marketing, proposal, and business development services to secure projects in drilling, geotechnical engineering and materials testing service areas.
  • Supervise, direct and coordinate geotechnical engineering workload and staffing levels for a multidisciplinary staff of engineers, drillers and technicians.
  • Provide mentoring, technical oversight, and senior level QA/QC on geotechnical and materials testing projects.
  • Review client invoices for accuracy and evaluation of project profitability.
  • Cultivate and maintain client relationships.

Technical:

  • Coordinate, implement and deliver geotechnical and construction testing projects.
  • Prepare geotechnical reports to include subsurface logs, geologic profiles, location plans, site maps, and engineering recommendations.
  • Supervise and perform laboratory and field testing as needed in support of engineering projects.
  • Prepare client invoices and ensure client satisfaction.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS or MS degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Iowa, or the ability to obtain license within 3 months.
  • A minimum of 4 years of geotechnical engineering experience, with at least 2 years of business management and supervisory experience.
  • Experience in the design of shallow foundation systems, deep foundation systems (driven piles, augured cast-in-place piles, drilled shafts), ground improvement techniques, slope stability analysis and the use of geotextiles.
  • Strong financial and business management experience including business development, budget preparation, profit/loss responsibility, human resource management and asset management knowledge.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite.
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to pass pre-employment drug screen.

Environmental Project Manager

GSI is seeking experienced candidates for a full-time Environmental Project Manager position in one of our Kansas offices. The successful candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills, strong technical skills and attention to detail, and experience working with regulatory agencies. The successful candidate will have the desire and ability to work outdoors in all climates and travel regionally, the ability to safely lift up to 75 pounds repeatedly, and the capability of obtaining experience in all phases of geotechnical and environmental investigation techniques. The successful candidate will have strong mechanical skills and the ability to take accurate and complete field notes.   • Operate Central Mine Equipment (CME), Mobile, Diedrich, and Geoprobe drilling equipment.
  • Assist driller with the following tasks: drilling with hollow stem augers and continuous flight augers, rock coring using conventional and wire line methods, standard penetration testing and thin walled tube soil sampling, and constructing monitoring wells and piezometers.
  • Maintain technically accurate and neat field logs.
